France: François Bayrou Appointed as New Prime Minister

French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed François Bayrou as the new Prime Minister, succeeding Michel Barnier, who was removed from office following a historic no-confidence vote last week, according to an announcement from the French presidency.

“The President of the Republic has appointed Mr. François Bayrou as Prime Minister and entrusted him with the task of forming a government,” stated a communiqué from the Élysée Palace.

At 73 years old, François Bayrou is the leader of MoDem, a centrist party he founded, and has been a close ally of Emmanuel Macron, consistently supporting him since he took office in France.

With this appointment, Bayrou becomes the sixth Prime Minister under Emmanuel Macron since 2017 and the 28th Prime Minister of the Fifth Republic.
