Floods in Kenya: At Least 88 Dead Since Early March (New Toll)
At least 88 people have died since the beginning of March in flooding across Kenya, according to a new toll released by the government.
The Kenyan government announced Tuesday that two rivers had overflowed, flooding farmland and forcing families to flee their homes, bringing the death toll this month to 88.
A previous toll had reported 81 deaths.
At least 21 counties have been affected by the floods, raising concerns about public safety, infrastructure damage, and increasing humanitarian needs. The number of displaced people has now exceeded 34,000, according to the Kenyan Ministry of the Interior.
The latest flooding occurred in western Kenya, where the Nyando River overflowed on Monday, submerging parts of the Ahero Bridge on the Kericho–Awasi–Kisumu road and disrupting transport in the region.
The government issued a statement warning motorists against using the flooded road and advising them to take alternative routes, especially at night when visibility is reduced.
Meanwhile, emergency response efforts have intensified in the hardest-hit areas, led by the Kenya Red Cross Society, which is rescuing stranded residents and relocating families to safer areas.
