Fire Breaks Out at Oil Storage Facility in Tehran Suburb

A significant incident occurred on Wednesday at an oil storage facility in Rey, located south of Tehran, when a fire broke out in tanks holding a total of 18,000 tons of oil. While initial reports from the semi-official news agency, Tasnim, did not provide further details, Mehr News Agency confirmed that the fire involved storage tanks in Rey, an area well-known for its oil reserves.

The CEO of the National Iranian Oil Distribution Company confirmed the fire’s occurrence, specifying that it took place in storage tanks with a total capacity of 18,000 tons. Fortunately, the blaze was contained quickly, preventing its spread to surrounding areas. One of the firefighters present at the scene stated that the fire had been brought under control, with emergency response teams still monitoring the situation.

This incident is not unique to Iran, as fires at oil refineries and storage facilities have occurred in the country in the past. In October 2024, a fire at an oil refinery claimed the life of one individual. Prior to that, a separate incident in central Iran resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to seven others.

The cause of the current fire remains under investigation, but it serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by the oil industry in Iran, which continues to experience periodic accidents at its key energy infrastructure.
