Fighter Jet Crashes, Pilot Ejects Safely in Northern Finland

A Finnish fighter jet crashed on Wednesday near Rovaniemi Airport in northern Finland; however, the pilot successfully ejected, according to the Finnish Air Force.

“The aircraft went down during a rehearsal for an air show. Fortunately, the pilot managed to eject from the plane before impact and landed in a designated area of the airbase. He survived the ejection with only minor injuries,” stated Timo Herranen, commander of the Finnish Air Force.

“We have assembled a team to investigate the incident,” he added, declining to comment “at this time” on the crash’s causes, which will need to be determined through the investigation.

The F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet went down at Rovaniemi Airport around 11 AM local time (08:00 GMT), as previously reported by the Finnish military.

No injuries have been reported on the ground, and the incident did not disrupt civilian air traffic at Rovaniemi Airport.
