Explosion at Munitions Factory in Northwestern Turkey Claims 12 Lives

At least 12 people have been killed and three others injured in an explosion at a munitions factory in the Karisi region of northwestern Turkey, according to the governor of Balıkesir province, Ismail Ostaoglu.

Ostaoglu reported to Turkish media that the explosion resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals, while the injured were quickly transported to a local hospital. Thankfully, their condition is not considered life-threatening. The factory, which produces munitions and explosives for civilian use, was the site of the deadly blast.

Television footage showed extensive damage to the factory, with metal sheets and glass debris scattered across the area, and a significant portion of the building collapsing. Ostaoglu confirmed that the factory is located about one kilometer away from the nearest village, to the north of the city of Balıkesir.

An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the explosion, though local authorities have ruled out the possibility of sabotage or foul play.

This incident highlights a series of occasional explosions in Turkey’s military and civilian facilities, which are often attributed to technical or administrative failures within factories.
