European Parliament Approves €90 Billion Loan Package for Ukraine

The European Parliament on Wednesday approved a €90 billion ($107 billion) loan package for Ukraine, fast-tracking a major financial support plan aimed at sustaining Kyiv’s public services and strengthening its defense capabilities.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the swift adoption of the proposal, reaffirming the European Union’s commitment to Ukraine. She said Ukraine’s resilience remains strong and stressed that supporting the country contributes to the security of Europe as a whole.
Under the framework, €30 billion ($35.8 billion) will be allocated as macroeconomic support, either through macro-financial assistance or the Ukraine Facility, the EU’s dedicated mechanism for providing stable financial aid to Kyiv. The remaining €60 billion ($71.5 billion) will be directed toward boosting Ukraine’s defense industrial capacity and supporting the procurement of military equipment from both Ukrainian and EU defense industries.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola described the vote as delivering a “vital lifeline” for Ukraine, noting that the funding will help maintain essential public services while reinforcing the country’s defense. The package still requires formal approval from the EU Council before the European Commission can release the first tranche of funds, expected in early 2026.
