EU Welcomes Trump’s Decision to Pause Tariffs, Calls It Key to Economic Stability

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed strong support for US President Donald Trump’s recent decision to pause sweeping tariffs, describing the move as an essential step toward stabilizing the global economy.

In a statement issued Thursday, von der Leyen stressed the importance of creating clear and predictable conditions that would facilitate smooth trade and the effective functioning of global supply chains. She reiterated her long-standing position that tariffs, which she described as taxes on consumers and businesses, ultimately harm economies.

“Tariffs are taxes that only hurt businesses and consumers,” von der Leyen remarked, emphasizing that she has long advocated for a “zero-for-zero tariff” deal between the EU and the US. “The EU remains committed to constructive negotiations with the US, with the goal of achieving frictionless and mutually beneficial trade.”

Additionally, von der Leyen outlined Europe’s efforts to expand its global trade relationships, pointing out that the EU is working with countries that account for 87% of global trade. She underlined that these partnerships are part of the EU’s broader commitment to open and free exchanges of goods, services, and ideas.

The European Commission President also pointed to the ongoing work to remove barriers within the EU’s single market, calling the market an “anchor of stability and resilience” during uncertain global times.

“We are stepping up our work to lift barriers in our own single market,” she said, adding that her team would continue to work relentlessly to safeguard European interests. “Together, Europeans will emerge stronger from this crisis.”

On Wednesday, President Trump announced a 90-day suspension of tariffs, excluding China from the pause. Instead of benefiting from the suspension, China’s tariff rate has been increased to 125%, a move that is likely to heighten tensions between the two nations.
