EU: Von der Leyen set to assign the Commission representatives

BRUSSELS – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is set to assign the countries’ representatives on Tuesday, who will win powerful roles on trade, competition, and the green agenda.

Each of the 27 EU member states will have one representative on the European Commission. The nominees for these positions will undergo a hearing process in the European Parliament in the coming weeks. During these hearings, EU lawmakers will take the representatives’ promises to implement their plans and priorities if appointed to the Commission.

Each commissioner would be responsible for a specific portfolio or policy area, much like a minister in a national government. Accordingly, their roles and influence can vary significantly based on the assigned portfolio.

The most influential positions typically include those overseeing trade, competition, energy, and the internal market, as these areas have a profound impact on businesses and consumers throughout Europe.

The Commission is the European Union’s executive body and most powerful institution. It has the power to propose legislation, implement policies, manage the EU budget, block mergers between companies, and sign free trade deals.
