EU, Ukraine say US-backed Ceasefire Proposal Could Pave the Way for Peace

The European Union and Ukraine expressed cautious optimism on Wednesday regarding a potential ceasefire proposal discussed during recent US-Ukrainian talks in Saudi Arabia, calling it a possible breakthrough toward ending the war — but emphasized that it is now Russia’s responsibility to demonstrate a real commitment to peace.

Meeting in Brussels for the 10th EU-Ukraine Association Council, both sides reiterated their condemnation of Moscow’s military actions. A joint statement issued after the high-level meeting declared that the ceasefire proposal, if accepted by Russia, “can be an important step,” urging Moscow to show willingness to end the conflict.

The talks were chaired by Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas leading the EU delegation. They were joined by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos. The Council reaffirmed support for a “comprehensive, just and lasting peace” based on international law, welcomed Ukraine’s reform progress and EU integration path, and condemned Russia’s recent strikes on civilians.
