The defense and security of Europe and Ukraine are intertwined, EU Council President Antonio Costa stated on Thursday during the special summit in Brussels. Joined by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Costa underscored the EU’s commitment to supporting Ukraine for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace.
Von der Leyen stressed the urgency of the moment, calling it a “watershed” for both Europe and Ukraine. She highlighted the need for Europe to be able to defend itself and ensure Ukraine’s security, announcing the “Rearm Europe” plan to bolster European defense capabilities.
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the EU’s continued support, calling it a crucial signal for the Ukrainian people, soldiers, and families. He emphasized that Ukraine does not stand alone in its struggle and welcomed the EU’s commitment to lasting peace.
