EU Foreign Policy Chief Calls for Diversification Amid US Tariffs and Ukraine Aid Push

The EU foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, stated on Thursday that there are “no winners in trade wars” following the U.S.’s announcement of a 20% tariff on European goods. Speaking to the press at a defense ministers’ meeting in Poland, Kallas emphasized the negative effects these tariffs would have on consumers, noting that they would inevitably raise prices across Europe.
Kallas also highlighted the necessity for the EU to bolster its own defense capabilities, particularly in light of increased reliance on American defense products. “We are buying a lot from the Americans right now, but we need to diversify our portfolio so we have the capabilities to produce here,” she remarked. This push for diversification includes expanding partnerships with other allies in order to strengthen Europe’s defense industry.
As part of its ongoing support for Ukraine, the EU has already contributed more than half of Ukraine’s ammunition needs, but Kallas urged for faster action to ensure continued support. “These things are moving very well, but we need to get the help to Ukraine as fast as possible,” she stated.
At the defense ministers’ meeting, Kallas expects an announcement of more short-term aid for Ukraine, stressing that a stronger Ukraine on the battlefield will lead to a stronger negotiating position. “Because the stronger they are on the battlefield, the stronger they are behind the negotiation table,” she added.
