EU Fines Meta $842 Million Over Anticompetitive Practices

The European Commission has imposed a fine of €797 million ($842 million) on Meta, the parent company of Facebook, for engaging in anticompetitive practices related to its online marketplace, Facebook Marketplace.
Following a lengthy investigation, the Commission concluded that Meta abused its dominant position by tying its social network services to its classified ads platform. The company was accused of automatically exposing Facebook users to Marketplace, regardless of their preferences, and unfairly excluding competitors.
Meta responded by denying any harm to competition or consumers, claiming the decision overlooks the thriving European market for online classified services. The company has announced its intention to appeal the ruling.
