EU Finalizes Strategic Defense Roadmap to Strengthen Military Preparedness

The European Union has completed its strategic defense roadmap, aimed at enhancing Europe’s preparedness against potential military threats. Andrius Kubilius, the EU Commissioner for Defense and Space, announced the completion of the “White Paper,” emphasizing its significance in bolstering the continent’s defense and deterrence capabilities.

Speaking at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Kubilius underscored the urgency of strengthening European defense in light of shifting global security dynamics. He warned that with Russia’s military industry at full capacity and the possibility of a NATO conflict looming within five years, Europe must take a more proactive role in ensuring its security.

Kubilius stressed that Europe’s reliance on the United States is becoming increasingly uncertain due to Washington’s strategic pivot toward Asia. He urged the EU to take greater responsibility for its own defense, stating that military preparedness is the only way to deter future conflicts. He also reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Ukraine as part of its broader efforts to maintain regional stability.

The EU, however, currently lacks sufficient military resources, including tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery. Kubilius called for a robust investment plan, estimating that at least €500 billion is needed to close the defense gap.

The roadmap serves as the foundation of an “industrial victory program,” which aims to strengthen Europe’s defense industry. Poland’s Minister for European Affairs, Adam Szlapka, echoed Kubilius’ concerns, calling the current geopolitical landscape a “turning point” for European security. He stressed the need for a unified response from EU institutions and member states, urging increased defense spending and greater investment in European defense technology to secure peace and democracy across the continent.
