EU Defense Chief: Europe Lacks Drone Detection Capabilities

European Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius admitted that Europe currently lacks the proper capabilities to detect drones, stressing the urgent need to strengthen defenses within the next year. Speaking to Euractiv, he said the challenge goes far beyond traditional systems.

Kubilius explained that while Europe may be able to track fighter jets and missiles, drones pose a different threat: they fly low, are small in size, and are extremely difficult to monitor. This creates major blind spots in Europe’s defense infrastructure.

He added that although some progress could be made in the short term, building a comprehensive land-and-sea network to detect and neutralize drone threats would take much longer, requiring significant investment and coordination among EU members.
