EU Announces New Sanctions Package Against Russia

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has unveiled a fresh set of EU sanctions aimed at increasing pressure on Russia. The latest measures target key economic and financial sectors, as well as individuals and media outlets.
Among the new sanctions, the EU has imposed a ban on primary aluminum imports from Russia and sanctioned 48 individuals and 35 companies. Additionally, more than 10 Russian banks will be disconnected from the SWIFT payment system, while transactions with several airports and ports are now prohibited. The sanctions also place restrictions on 73 Russian tankers and ban eight more Russian media outlets from broadcasting within the EU.
This latest package reflects the EU’s continued efforts to tighten economic pressure on Moscow amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. Von der Leyen emphasized that these measures aim to weaken Russia’s ability to fund its military operations and limit its global influence.
