The EU Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) confirmed on Monday that the recent cyber incident which disrupted airport operations across Europe was the result of a ransomware attack. In a statement to Anadolu, the agency said it is coordinating efforts at the European level to support member states in their response.
ENISA emphasized that both the CSIRTs Network, which brings together national incident responders, and CyCLONe, the network of national authorities for cyber crisis management, are actively exchanging information and working to contain the fallout. “We would like to update you that the cyberattack is confirmed to be a ransomware attack,” the agency said.
The attack targeted a third-party system provider, causing widespread flight disruptions at several major European airports, including London’s Heathrow, as well as airports in Brussels and Berlin. Brussels Airport canceled at least four flights, including routes to Rwanda and Amsterdam, after automated check-in and boarding systems were disabled. Berlin Airport reported longer wait times, while Heathrow cited a “technical issue” at Collins Aerospace, the company that provides check-in systems to airlines worldwide.
