
ALGIERS – Algerian and foreign experts were unanimous, in Algiers, in the view that the Emir Abdelkader highly contributed to the codification of texts enshrining human rights, in the modern sense of the term, showing open-mindedness by accepting dialogue with those who do not share his beliefs.
Speaking at the first session of the international conference entitled “Honouring the Glories of the Nation: The Historic, Civilisational and Heritage Achievements of the Emir Abdelkader,” held under the high patronage of the president of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algerian and foreign researchers and historians shed light on “the Emir Abdelkader’s historical and political positions, as well as his contribution to the la promulgation of laws enshrining human rights, in the modern sense of the term, and his open-mindedness” with others.
Dr Abderrahmane Benbouziane, a senior lecturer at the University of Tlemcen, focused on “the human aspect of the Emir Abdelkader,” mentioning “his treatment of European prisoners of war,” and considering him as “one of the most illustrious figures in modern history.”
In an address at the event, the leader of the Zawiya Naqshbandi, Sheikh Abdelhafid Benchouk, said the Emir was “the very example of a great man in every respect and a model to follow, especially his open-mindedness and his relations with Kings and heads of state.”
Emir Abdelkader, according to Professor Mustapha Khayati, was “the first founder of international humanitarian law,” through “his good treatment of prisoners and his respect for religious freedom.”
Professor Abdelkader Dahdouh, a teacher at the University Centre of Tipasa, stressed the main foundations of the modern Algerian state, founded by the Emir Abdelkader after his allegiance, namely “the creation of state seals, the design of a flag, the establishment of a modern army, the minting of a national currency, the designation of a capital city, the appointment of government members, walis (provincial governors) and executives,” as well as “the establishment of diplomatic and trade relations.”
Organized by the ministry of Mujahideen (national liberation war veterans) and Rights Holders, in coordination with the ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, the conference is part of the events marking the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the glorious Revolution for liberation.
