El Djeich magazine emphasized that Algeria continues to build its edifice, looking forward with resolve and effort to greater development and progress, steadily advancing on its victorious national journey towards a new and triumphant Algeria.
In its editorial titled “Men Depart, their Legacy Endures,” the magazine said Algeria has bid farewell on 28th March 2026, to one of its most loyal sons, former President Mujahid Liamine Zeroual who passed away at the age of 85, having devoted his entire life to the service of his country. His funeral was marked by solemnity and emotion, attended by Mr President of the Republic, Supreme Chief of the Armed Forces, Minister of National Defence, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, senior state officials, comrades from the struggle, and a large crowd of citizens who came from all corners of the country to pay their tribute to this virtuous and devoted patriot, the editorial said.
The magazine highlighted that from a young age, Liamine Zeroual was imbued with the values of patriotism, sacrifice, and selflessness. At sixteen, he joined the National Liberation Army as a Mujahid, fighting the abhorrent occupier and striving for Algeria’s freedom from the shackles of oppression. After regaining national sovereignty, he continued his struggle as an officer in the ranks of People’s National Army, where he fulfilled his duty completely, rising through the ranks with distinction. He held the position of Minister of National Defence, right after being ambassador, then head of State, and ultimately the President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria. Following the Algerian people’s endorsement to lead the country in one of its darkest periods, Liamine Zeroual assumed the presidency with wisdom, insight, and resolve. He steered Algeria away from the brink of collapse, quelling discord and guiding our homeland back to stability.
“It was a long and full journey, through which late Liamine Zeroual left a noble and enduring legacy, rich in high values and virtues. He was a man of honesty, simplicity, and humility — yet also of firmness and patience — who never hesitated to answer the call of duty whenever Algeria needed him,” the editorial said, adding that throughout his life, his foremost concern was safeguarding the unity of the country and strengthening the foundations of its security and stability. For him, Algeria’s backbone was its ambitious youth, and its path was lit by the sacrifices of its illustrious forebears.”
El Djeich magazine noted that the esteemed legacy and illustrious career of late Liamine Zeroual remain a guiding light — a beacon to be followed in honour of Algeria’s faithful sons who served their homeland with integrity, devotion, and courage. “These men never faltered when the country called, offering the greatest of sacrifices and placing Algeria’s interests above all else, firmly convinced of the weight and sanctity of the trust placed upon them.”
As Mr. President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, remarked when reflecting on the great man’s character: “I hold a special affection for Mr Liamine. When you spoke to him, you spoke to a true Algerian. He was an honest and patriotic man who never deceived at any stage, and I bear witness that he cared deeply for ordinary people.”
“These are the values that every devoted Algerian should embrace, taking them as a guiding path and a beacon of light. They safeguard the legacy of our illustrious forebears and preserve Algeria’s security and stability— especially in an international and regional context now marked by turmoil, fluctuation, and uncertainty,” the editorial said.
The magazine stressed that this sensitive stage demands, more than ever, a solid national unity, a strong and harmonious internal front, and the rallying of all national forces around the supreme interest of the homeland.
“It is a time when honourable Algerians continue to fulfill their noble responsibilities, foremost among them the sons and daughters of People’s National Army, carrying out their duties with unwavering determination, dedication, and competence. They inherit the lofty values of their forebears, generation after generation, following their righteous path, imbued with the virtues of loyalty, sacrifice, and selflessness. With unyielding resolve and an indomitable will, they work to strengthen the foundations of security and stability, consolidate the peace our country enjoys, and safeguard Algeria’s sovereignty. Whatever the circumstances, they remain steadfast in preserving the country’s territorial integrity and unity,” the editorial added.
This was affirmed by Mr. General Saïd Chanegriha, Delegate Minister to the Minister of National Defence, Chief of People’s National Army Staff, who stated: “I remain absolutely certain that you will continue, as I have always known you to be, to live up to the trust placed in you by your people and your leadership. You will achieve the best results on the ground and realise the objectives set to ensure the country’s security and stability, while supporting the sincere development efforts pursued day and night for the prosperity and growth of the new and triumphant Algeria. In doing so, you will lay the foundations of a promising future and a bright tomorrow, guided by the values of the glorious November Revolution and the sacrifices of our righteous Chouhada and illustrious Mujahideen.”
El Djeich magazine concluded its editorial by underscoring that Algeria will always remain a land that gives rise to loyal men of high aspirations and steadfast determination. Thanks to the awareness of its people, it will endure strong and proud, as it has throughout the depths of history, offering a refined model of unity and cohesion to be emulated.
