Earthquake Hits Syria, Rekindles Fears of Last Year’s Deadly Quake

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale struck northern Syria on Monday evening.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that Dr. Raed Ahmed, head of the National Seismological Center in Syria, stated that the earthquake occurred 28 kilometers east of Hama at 11:56 PM local time.

There have been no reports of material or human losses as a result of the earthquake, which was felt by residents in various parts of Lebanon and Jordan. The Jordanian Seismological Observatory mentioned that the earthquake’s epicenter was located in northern Syria, about 350 kilometers from the capital, Amman.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences initially reported a 4.8-magnitude earthquake affecting both Jordan and Syria late Monday night, with tremors felt in both countries and in Lebanon. The center also noted that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. Initially, the earthquake’s magnitude was recorded at 5.46 but was later revised downward.

On February 6, 2023, southern Turkey and northern Syria were struck by two severe earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.7 and 7.6, followed by thousands of violent aftershocks. These catastrophic events resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and caused extensive material damage.
