E3 Warn Iran of UN Sanctions if No Nuclear Deal Reached by End of August

TEHRAN – The United Kingdom, France, and Germany have formally warned Iran that they are prepared to reimpose United Nations sanctions if Tehran fails to agree to a nuclear deal by the end of August, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing a letter sent to the UN. The letter, addressed to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the Security Council, underscored the E3’s readiness to trigger the “snapback” mechanism if diplomatic efforts stall.
According to the German Foreign Ministry, the E3 met with Iranian representatives in Istanbul on July 26, offering Tehran a potential delay in the resumption of UN sanctions if it complies with its “legal obligations” and certain preconditions. The European powers made it clear that the proposal is a final opportunity for diplomacy, warning that failure to act or accept an extension would prompt immediate action.
The letter was signed by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
