DRC President unveils plans to form national unity government

The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Félix Tshisekedi, has announced plans to form a “national unity government” and implement changes within his political coalition, according to his spokesperson Tina Salma on Saturday evening.
“The President of the Republic confirms his intention to move towards a Congolese national unity government and to make changes within the leadership of the Sacred Union,” she said on social media.
On Saturday, Tshisekedi held a meeting with members of the Sacred Union, a coalition that includes his Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) and its allied parties.
The meeting largely focused on the security situation, particularly the advances of the March 23 rebels (M23), who have claimed control of several strategic cities, including Goma and Bukavu, the capitals of North Kivu and South Kivu provinces, respectively.
The president’s spokesperson did not provide further details about the changes planned for the new government or the Sacred Union coalition. The current government was formed in June following Tshisekedi’s re-election in the December 2023 presidential elections.
