Denmark to Summon Diplomat over Alleged U.S. Espionage in Greenland

Denmark announced on Wednesday that it will summon one of its diplomats in the US to address allegations that American intelligence agencies are being directed to escalate espionage operations in Greenland.

The claims, which were discussed by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen during an EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Poland, have raised concerns about the security implications for the region.

Rasmussen acknowledged the troubling nature of the allegations but emphasized that Denmark will consult with its charge d’affaires in the US, Jennifer Hall Godfrey, to gather more details.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the US has reportedly expanded its intelligence activities in Greenland, with some observers linking the move to former US President Donald Trump’s previous interest in acquiring the autonomous Danish territory.

Trump had publicly discussed the idea of purchasing or annexing Greenland during his presidency, citing national and international security concerns. His administration’s efforts to secure the region have fueled speculation about the motivations behind the alleged increase in US intelligence operations there.
