Denmark Condemns Trump’s Remarks on Greenland, Accuses US of Escalating Tensions

Denmark strongly criticized US President Donald Trump on Thursday over his recent comments on Greenland, accusing Washington of interfering in its internal affairs and fueling tensions. Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said Trump’s remarks were unacceptable, calling them a “hidden threat” against the Danish Realm. He warned that the US was going too far in disregarding Greenland’s right to self-determination.

Trump stated on Wednesday that the US “needs” Greenland for international security and suggested that it might eventually come under American control. His comments were met with outrage in Copenhagen, with Poulsen dismissing them as “far-fetched and unreasonable.” Greenland’s Prime Minister-elect Jens-Frederik Nielsen also rejected the notion, urging Europe to stand with the island, asserting that Greenland “is not and will never be for sale.”

Greenland, a Danish territory with home rule since 1979, is of immense strategic value due to its location and mineral wealth. Despite repeated US interest in acquiring the island, both Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected any sale. A recent survey found that 85% of Greenland’s population opposes joining the US, further reinforcing its determination to maintain autonomy.
