Death Toll from Monsoon Rains and Flash Floods Rises to 73 in Pakistan and India

ISLAMABAD/NEW DELHI — The death toll from ongoing monsoon rains and flash floods has climbed to 73 across Pakistan and India, as authorities brace for more rainfall in the coming days.
In Pakistan, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that at least 63 people have died and over 100 others have been injured in rain-related incidents since June 26. The latest figures show six deaths and 14 injuries in the past 24 hours alone. Punjab province reported 21 deaths, including 11 children; Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 22 deaths, including 10 children and five women; Sindh 15 fatalities; and Balochistan five.
Heavy downpours have also caused significant infrastructure damage and disrupted transport, particularly in vulnerable low-lying and mountainous areas. Scattered rain is expected to persist, according to weather authorities.
In India, the northern state of Himachal Pradesh has been hit by at least 16 cloudbursts and three flash floods, bringing the death toll there to 10, with 34 people still missing, according to the state’s Emergency Operations Centre. Over 350 individuals have been rescued in the last 32 hours as emergency teams continue search and relief operations.
The monsoon season in both countries typically extends from June through September, often bringing both relief and devastation in equal measure.
