Death of Myanmar’s Interim President Myint Swe

Myint Swe, the interim president of Myanmar, passed away on Thursday morning in Naypyidaw, the nation’s capital, at the age of 74. The National Defense and Security Council (NDSC) announced his death and stated that arrangements for a national funeral will be made.

Two days earlier, the NDSC confirmed that Myint Swe had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and other related neurological disorders. After undergoing treatment in Singapore in 2024, his condition deteriorated in July 2025, marked by significant symptoms such as weight loss and cognitive decline. This decline led to his admission on July 24 to the special intensive care unit at General Hospital No. 2 for the defense services in Naypyidaw.

Myint Swe had been on medical leave since July 2024, during which he delegated his responsibilities to General Min Aung Hlaing. Born in 1951 in the Mandalay region, he graduated from the Defense Services Academy in 1971 and held various military ranks within the Tatmadaw (the Burmese army) before retiring in 2010 with the rank of lieutenant general.

From 2011 to 2016, Myint Swe served as the Chief Minister of the Yangon region. He took the oath of office as Vice President of Myanmar on March 30, 2016. On February 1, 2021, following the detention of then-President Win Myint, he assumed the role of interim president and subsequently declared a state of emergency, transferring power to the Commander-in-Chief of the defense services, Min Aung Hlaing.
