Danish Organization Condemns Western Ignorance of International Law in Western Sahara

Nicholas Nyrop, Political Campaigns Officer for the Danish organization “Global Action,” expressed his shame over the West’s disregard for international law and ethical principles concerning Western Sahara. Speaking to the press, Nyrop criticized how the EU and the U.S. continue to overlook rulings by the European Court of Justice, which declared trade agreements between the EU and Morocco illegal, despite the occupation of Western Sahara.

He also highlighted that recent events, such as climate activist Greta Thunberg’s visit to refugee camps and the firebombing of Global Action’s Copenhagen office, have increased global attention on the Western Sahara issue. Nyrop noted that the attack on the office in mid-January, which received widespread support from Danish civil society, marked a positive shift in solidarity for a free Western Sahara.

He also urged the Danish government to condemn the attack, noting the lack of response from political leaders. The firebombing, according to Nyrop, not only targeted the organization’s work but also represents a weakness for Moroccan occupation supporters, as Western Sahara has gained unprecedented solidarity in Denmark.
