Cyclone Jude Hits Mozambique, Killing Six and Displacing Thousands

At least six people have died, and more than 900 homes have been destroyed after Cyclone Jude struck northern Mozambique earlier this week, authorities announced on Wednesday.

The cyclone made landfall on Monday, bringing wind speeds of up to 195 km/h and more than 250 mm of rainfall within 24 hours, according to Mozambique’s National Institute of Meteorology.

Jude is the third cyclone to hit the country in just four months. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management reported that, in addition to the six deaths, 20 people were injured, and around 9,500 individuals have been affected.

Although the storm has since weakened into a tropical depression, it continues to cause heavy rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms across the region.

Mozambique has faced repeated cyclonic disasters in recent months. In December, Cyclone Chido killed at least 120 people and damaged nearly 120,000 homes. This was followed by Cyclone Dikeledi in mid-January, which left five dead and destroyed approximately 3,500 homes.
