Colombia: Discovery of a ‘Massive’ Gas Deposit in the Caribbean

On Thursday, the Colombian national oil company Ecopetrol and Brazilian oil giant Petrobras announced a “significant discovery” of an offshore natural gas field with the potential to “double the country’s reserves.”

Located in the Colombian Caribbean off the coast of Santa Marta, this gas field was initially discovered in 2022. Its reserves are now estimated at “6,000 billion cubic feet of gas,” making it the “most substantial well discovered since the 1990s,” as revealed by Ecopetrol on X.

“This gas field has the potential to double Colombia’s reserves,” stated Rogério Soares, Petrobras’ General Director of Exploratory Assets, during an event in Cartagena, northern Colombia.

The size of this deposit is comparable to that of the Cuchupa field in Riohacha, which has been supplying gas to the country for the past 45 years.
