China Warns Against ‘Ideological Lines’ in AI Development Amid US Criticism

China on Wednesday cautioned against imposing ideological barriers in artificial intelligence (AI) development, criticizing the politicization of technological advancements.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated that Beijing opposes “the generalization of national security concerns and the politicization of economic and technological issues,” responding to remarks made by US Vice President JD Vance. Vance had accused authoritarian regimes of misusing AI for military intelligence and propaganda purposes.
China, Guo emphasized, remains committed to fostering AI innovation, ensuring security, and supporting independent technological progress. He highlighted Beijing’s efforts to promote AI accessibility, assist developing nations, and advocate for open-source AI solutions.
Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing called for inclusive and cooperative AI governance to build a “shared future for mankind.” He underscored AI’s transformative impact and China’s responsible engagement in global AI policies.
Meanwhile, China’s DeepSeek AI model has rapidly gained prominence as a cost-effective alternative to Western platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Since its launch in January, DeepSeek has become the most downloaded free app in the US, triggering global concerns.
South Korea, Australia, and Taiwan have urged government employees to avoid the software, while reports indicate cyberattacks—mostly traced to US IP addresses—have targeted the Chinese AI tool.
