China Urges US to Uphold London Trade Consensus

BEIJING — China on Thursday called on the United States to uphold the consensus reached during recent trade talks in London, after President Donald Trump announced that a deal with Beijing was “done” and confirmed that China would supply rare earths, including full magnets, to the US.
“Now that a consensus has been reached, both sides should abide by it,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a press briefing, emphasizing that Beijing “always honors its commitments with concrete actions.”
The two-day talks in the UK, concluded late Tuesday, were held under the strategic guidance of Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump. Lin said the negotiators reached a consensus in principle on implementing the results of a June 5 phone call between the two leaders, and built upon progress made at the Geneva economic and trade discussions.
Urging Washington to follow through, Lin called on the US to “implement the important consensus” from the leaders’ call, reduce misunderstandings, and “enhance cooperation through communication and dialogue.”
