China: Typhoon Bebinca makes landfall in Shanghai, expected to intensify at night

SHANGHAI – Typhoon Bebinca made landfall in Shanghai on Monday morning, pummeling the city with torrential rain and gusts of wind, reported Xinhua News Agency.
According to the Shanghai central meteorological observatory, the wind speed reached 151 kph near its centre, making it the strongest typhoon to hit Shanghai in 75 years.
On Sunday, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters activated a Level IV emergency response for Anhui Province in eastern China and elevated the response to Level III for Shanghai and Zhejiang, added Xinhua.
Accordingly, over 1,400 flights from the city’s two airports and more than 570 passenger trains have been cancelled since Sunday evening, disrupting travel plans for many during the three-day Mid-Autumn Festival holiday.
The Shanghai Typhoon Institute of the China Meteorological Administration warned that the wind and rain are due to intensify on Monday night.
