China-Russia Eastern Gas Pipeline Fully Connected

The eastern route of the China-Russia gas pipeline, which features the highest gas transport capacity for a single line in China, has been fully connected, as announced by its operator on Monday.
According to the China Oil & Gas Pipeline Network Corporation (PipeChina), the pipeline has also reached its full operational capacity, with an annual transportation volume of 38 billion cubic meters.
As a flagship project of energy cooperation between China and Russia, the cross-border gas pipeline comprises a 3,000-kilometer section in Russia and an additional 5,111 kilometers in China.
The Chinese section of the pipeline begins in Heihe, a northeastern city bordering Russia, and transports natural gas from Siberia southward to Shanghai, China’s economic and financial hub.
The complete connection of the pipeline significantly enhances the natural gas supply capacity and emergency peak shaving capabilities in eastern China, where population density is high. This milestone also signifies the completion of the country’s strategic eastern energy corridor, stated PipeChina.
Since the commissioning of the northern part of the Chinese section in December 2019, the pipeline has transported over 80 billion cubic meters of natural gas, benefiting approximately 450 million people along its route.
The China-Russia eastern gas pipeline is the third long-distance cross-border pipeline supplying gas to the country, following the China-Central Asia and China-Myanmar pipelines.
