China Reiterates Opposition to US Tariffs Amid Trade Tensions

China reaffirmed its opposition to additional unilateral tariffs imposed by the US, warning that trade wars harm global economic interests. Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun emphasized that both nations should resolve disputes through dialogue and mutual respect, responding to US President Donald Trump’s remarks on a potential new trade deal.

Trump had suggested that a fresh agreement with China was possible, referencing the 2020 deal. He also hinted at a possible visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping but did not provide a timeline. Meanwhile, Trump has imposed a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports, prompting Beijing to retaliate with up to 15% duties on US goods. China has since lodged a complaint with the World Trade Organization.

In addition to trade measures, Trump has threatened 25% tariffs on all imported cars and recently signed executive orders imposing the same rate on steel and aluminum, effective March 12. In response, China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao conveyed “strong dissatisfaction” in a letter to newly appointed US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Wang stressed that China remains open to cooperation with the US based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and fair trade practices.
