China Imposes Sanctions on US Officials Over Hong Kong-Related Issues

China announced on Monday that it would impose sanctions on U.S. Congress members, officials, and heads of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for their actions related to Hong Kong. The sanctions target those involved in what China considers “egregious behavior” concerning the city’s affairs.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stressed that Hong Kong is a part of China and that Beijing would not tolerate foreign interference. His statement followed the U.S. imposition of sanctions earlier this month on six senior Chinese and Hong Kong officials, accusing them of transnational repression and undermining Hong Kong’s autonomy.

This development marks another escalation in the ongoing trade and diplomatic tensions between China and the United States.
