China Develops World’s Deepest Cable-Laying System, Surpassing Previous Records

Chinese engineers have achieved a groundbreaking feat with the creation of the Haiwei GD11000, the first cable-laying system capable of reaching the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, the ocean’s deepest point at over 11,000 meters (36,089 feet). The system was developed by Dalian Maritime University in collaboration with Chinese machinery and tech companies.

According to chief scientist Li Wenhua, the Haiwei GD11000 enables marine research at the maximum depth of all global oceans. The system boasts a safe working load exceeding 15 tonnes and operates at speeds up to 393.7 feet per minute. It has already successfully completed operations in the South China Sea at depths exceeding four kilometers.

This innovation significantly surpasses the previous depth record of 2,150 meters (7,053 feet), set by Italy’s Prysmian in July 2024, marking a milestone in marine technology and deep-sea exploration capabilities.
