Tianjin – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday urged member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to reinforce mutual trust, equality, and win-win cooperation in response to rising global challenges. Speaking as chair of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Tianjin, Wang highlighted the group’s founding principles—collectively known as the “Shanghai Spirit”—as essential for confronting today’s geopolitical and economic turbulence.
Wang pointed to a shifting global landscape marked by the rise of the Global South, deepening economic globalization, and the emergence of a multipolar world. However, he warned that this progress is being challenged by rising protectionism, hegemonic behavior, and persistent regional conflicts. He stressed the importance of unifying efforts to strengthen the SCO with a forward-looking vision rooted in historical responsibility.
Recognizing the SCO’s 24-year evolution into a stabilizing force in the region, Wang proposed five guiding principles for its future: enhanced security cooperation, inclusive development, stronger good-neighborly ties, firm multilateralism, and the defense of global fairness. He also announced that the upcoming SCO leaders’ summit will be held in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1, with over 20 heads of state and international organization leaders expected. Several preparatory resolutions were signed during the ministerial meeting.
