China Backs US-Russia Peace Talks Initiative at UN Security Council

China voiced its support for all efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine war, including a proposed agreement between the US and Russia to initiate peace talks, state media reported. Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on Monday, China’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Fu Cong, emphasized the need for dialogue over confrontation, urging all parties to engage in negotiations to reach a lasting and just peace settlement.
He highlighted China’s willingness to contribute to a political resolution while considering global concerns, particularly those of the Global South.
The support for US-Russia peace talks comes amid President Donald Trump’s push for negotiations to end the war. Fu also called on Europe to take an active role in addressing the root causes of the conflict and to work toward a balanced security framework for long-term stability.
His remarks align with China’s broader stance of advocating diplomatic solutions while maintaining its strategic ties with both Russia and Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution urging a swift end to the three-year-long war, reaffirming the UN’s commitment to global peace and security. The resolution stopped short of explicitly acknowledging Russia’s 2022 invasion but stressed the importance of a diplomatic settlement based on the principles of the UN Charter.
With China’s endorsement of renewed peace efforts, momentum may be building toward a potential breakthrough in the ongoing conflict.
