Chile Presidential Runoff: Communist Jara to Face Ultraconservative Kast

Communist Party candidate Jeannette Jara and her far-right rival José Antonio Kast will contest the second round of Chile’s presidential election, after emerging as the top two candidates in Sunday’s first-round vote.

The ruling center-left coalition candidate has garnered 26.71% of the vote, against 24.12% for her ultraconservative rival, according to official results with nearly 83% of ballots tallied.

The two candidates will now contest the runoff on December 14th. Over 15.6 million voters were called to choose among eight candidates, as well as to elect members of the Chamber of Deputies and half of the Senate.
