Chaos in Liverpool: Dozens Injured After Vehicle Plows Into Premier League Victory Parade

Dozens of people, including four children, were injured after a driver rammed a vehicle into a crowd celebrating Liverpool Football Club’s latest Premier League victory on Monday evening in northwest England.

A 53-year-old white British man, believed to be the driver, was arrested at the scene in Liverpool, according to Merseyside Police, as reported by CNN. The police described the crash as an “isolated incident” and stated they were not looking for additional suspects, nor treating the case as an act of terrorism.

Images published by Reuters on Tuesday morning showed debris scattered across the area, which was cordoned off with police tape. A police van could be seen parked across the street, blocking traffic.

Hundreds of thousands of jubilant football fans had lined the streets in central Liverpool on Monday, waving flags and setting off red smoke flares to celebrate the club’s 20th top-flight title with an open-top bus parade.

As the parade neared its conclusion, the joyful scenes turned to chaos. A video shared on social media appears to show a dark-colored minivan speeding into fans dressed in red. The crowd is later seen surrounding and shaking the vehicle after it comes to a halt.

In total, 27 people were transported to hospital, according to David Kitchin, head of the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, speaking at a press conference. Two of the injured — one child and one adult — sustained serious injuries.
