Chad Terminates Defense Cooperation Agreements with France (Official)

Chadian authorities have announced the termination of security and defense cooperation agreements with France, declared by the Chadian Foreign Minister shortly after a visit from his French counterpart, Jean-Noël Barrot.

“The Government of the Republic of Chad informs both national and international audiences of its decision to end the defense cooperation agreement signed with France,” stated Abderaman Koulamallah in a statement late Thursday night.

“This decision, made after thorough analysis, marks a historic turning point. After 66 years since the proclamation of the Republic of Chad, it is time for Chad to assert its full sovereignty and redefine its strategic partnerships based on national priorities,” he explained.

During a press conference in N’Djamena following a meeting between Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno and the French Foreign Minister, Koulamallah concluded by urging France to “recognize that Chad has grown and matured” and emphasized that “Chad is a sovereign state that places great value on its sovereignty.”
