Chad Closes Border With Sudan as Darfur Fighting Spills Over

Chad announced on Monday that it is closing its border with Sudan indefinitely following repeated clashes between Chadian soldiers and armed groups.
Communications Minister Mahamat Gassim Cherif said the closure aims to prevent the conflict from spreading into Chadian territory after several incursions by Sudanese forces. At least nine Chadian soldiers have been killed near the border since December.
The government’s statement emphasized that Chad reserves the right to retaliate against any violation of its territory. All cross-border movement of people and goods is suspended, though “exceptional exemptions” for humanitarian reasons may still be allowed.
