Canada : Trudeau Faces Mounting Pressure After Liberals Another By-Election Defeat

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faced renewed scrutiny on Tuesday after his Liberal Party suffered another defeat in a by-election, raising questions about his leadership ahead of the next federal election. The latest setback came as the Bloc Quebecois won in the electoral district of LaSalle-Emard-Verdun in Montreal, narrowly edging out the Liberals and the New Democratic Party (NDP) in a tightly contested race.

In response to the loss, Trudeau acknowledged the setback but emphasized the importance of focusing on the work ahead. “Obviously it would have been nicer to win, but there’s more work to do,” he said in Ottawa. Trudeau stressed the need to ensure that Canadians understand the choices available in the next election, underscoring his commitment to addressing the challenges facing his party.

The results from Elections Canada showed Bloc candidate Louis-Philippe Sauve securing 28% of the vote, with the Liberals’ Laura Palestini coming in just 248 votes behind with 27.2%. The NDP garnered 26.1% of the vote, trailing by about 600 votes. This loss marks the second time in three months that the Liberals have been defeated in a former stronghold, following a narrow loss to the Conservatives in Toronto-St. Paul’s in June
