Canada in Talks to Join Trump’s ‘Golden Dome’ Missile Defense Plan

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed Wednesday that his government is engaged in high-level discussions with US President Donald Trump’s administration about joining the proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense system. The project, aimed at reinforcing North American security, is part of Washington’s efforts to counter growing threats from countries like North Korea, Russia, and China.
Speaking in Ottawa after a Cabinet retreat, Carney acknowledged that Canada has the option to invest in and partner on the initiative, though he declined to provide financial details. He said the decision would be assessed from a military standpoint. The confirmation follows Trump’s recent remarks that Ottawa had expressed interest and would be expected to contribute its “fair share.”
Carney noted that defense cooperation between the two countries has long been under consideration and emphasized the growing importance of protective systems amid global tensions. While reaffirming past disagreements with Trump, he signaled a pragmatic shift, saying Canada will collaborate with the US “when necessary.”
