Canada Imposes New Sanctions on Myanmar Over Military’s Escalating Airstrikes

Canada announced a fresh round of sanctions targeting Myanmar’s military regime in response to its intensified aerial assaults, which have caused significant civilian casualties. The sanctions, coordinated with the United Kingdom and European Union, aim at three individuals and four entities accused of supplying weapons and equipment to the Myanmar military.
According to Canada’s Foreign Ministry, these airstrikes have led to the deaths of nearly 400 civilians, including over 60 children, and injured more than 750 people within the past six months. The ministry condemned these attacks as “a grave breach of international peace and security” and noted that they undermine “democracy and respect for human rights.”
Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to supporting Myanmar’s people in their pursuit of democratic reforms. “We will continue to put pressure on the regime to support the people of Myanmar in their path toward genuine and inclusive democracy,” Joly stated. The move reflects Canada’s ongoing stance against the Myanmar military’s oppressive actions and alignment with international partners to address the crisis.
