Cameroon’s Constitutional Court Declares Paul Biya Winner with 53.66% of Votes

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya was officially declared the winner of the presidential election by the country’s constitutional court on Monday, securing 53.66% of the vote.

At 92 years old, Biya—who has ruled Cameroon for 43 years—won an eighth term in office, defeating his main challenger, former minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who came second with 39.19%.

Tchiroma, however, continues to claim victory in the October 12 election. His supporters took to the streets of Douala on Sunday following his call to protest, leading to violent clashes with security forces that left at least four civilians dead.
