Cameroon: 35 Taxi Drivers Killed by Criminals in Two Months

Local media reported on Wednesday that thirty-five taxi drivers have been found dead in Cameroon over the past two months.
Pepouna Mama Bakayoko, president of the Cameroonian Taxi Drivers’ Association, stated, “In the last two months, the bodies of 35 taxi drivers have been discovered in remote areas of Yaoundé, the capital.” He added that “three other taxi drivers are currently missing and are being actively searched for.”
Bakayoko recounted, “Our taxi drivers are kidnapped by criminals posing as passengers. They are taken to isolated neighborhoods where they are murdered on-site after having their valuables and vehicles stolen, or they are left for dead with their hands and feet bound, discarded in a corner.” He emphasized that “taxi drivers have been enduring a particularly challenging period over the past two months.”
He also mentioned that “eight suspects have been arrested in connection with these murders, and interrogations are ongoing.”
According to reports from Cameroonian media, crime in all its forms has been steadily rising across various regions of the country in recent years, often leaving victims in its wake.
