CAF Rejects Morocco’s Protest, Confirms Senegal as AFCON 2025 Champions

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has rejected the complaint filed by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) concerning the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, dealing a major blow to Morocco, which had challenged the outcome of the match.

The African football governing body confirmed that the result of the final, won by Senegal, remains unchanged, with the Teranga Lions retaining their status as African champions.

In its statement, CAF said its Disciplinary Committee had met and determined that there were no grounds to annul or amend the final score. Senegal therefore remains champion, despite the incidents that marred the match and objections raised by the Moroccan side.

While the sporting result was upheld, CAF imposed a series of heavy disciplinary sanctions on both federations and several individuals involved in the final.

On the Moroccan side, Achraf Hakimi was suspended for two official matches, one of which is suspended for a one-year probation period. Ismaël Saibari received a three-match ban and a $100,000 fine. The FRMF was also fined more than $315,000 for various violations, including the intrusion of players and staff into the VAR area, the conduct of ball boys, and the use of laser devices by some supporters.

Senegal was not spared. Head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw was suspended for five matches and fined $100,000, while players Ismaïla Sarr and Iliman Ndiaye each received two-match suspensions for unsporting behavior toward the referee.

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) was fined more than $600,000 for the conduct of its players, technical staff, and supporters.
