Brazil’s Supreme Court Lifts Ban on Elon Musk’s X After Disinformation Dispute

Brazil’s Supreme Court has lifted a ban on Elon Musk’s social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, after the platform was blocked in a dispute over disinformation. Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who imposed the suspension, authorized the platform’s immediate return following X’s compliance with several court orders. The company paid millions of dollars in fines for previous violations. In his ruling, Moraes also gave Brazil’s communications regulator 24 hours to restore the platform’s access to users across the country.
Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and self-proclaimed “free speech absolutist,” has yet to publicly respond to the court’s decision. However, through its Global Affairs account, X expressed pride in returning to Brazil, reaffirming its commitment to “defending freedom of speech within the boundaries of the law” in all regions where it operates. X had been suspended in Brazil in late August following its failure to comply with regulations related to disinformation, particularly surrounding the 2022 election campaign. Additionally, the platform had neglected to appoint a legal representative in Brazil, as required by law.
Musk had sharply criticized Moraes following the ban, labeling him an “evil dictator” and comparing him to the fictional villain “Voldemort” from the Harry Potter series. Moraes, in response, accused X of undermining democracy by allowing misinformation to spread unchecked—a stance supported by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who emphasized that Brazil would not tolerate companies or platforms acting above the law. X eventually met all of the court’s demands and settled fines totaling $5.2 million, allowing the platform’s reinstatement. This dispute is part of Musk’s ongoing clashes with governments worldwide, including those of Australia and the United Kingdom, over the spread of online misinformation. Before the ban, X had 22 million users in Brazil, one of its most important markets.
