Boxing/Junior World Championships: Algeria Competes with Six Boxers in USA

The Algerian junior boxing team (boys) is set to participate in the World Championships scheduled from October 26 to November 2 in Colorado, USA. The team will be represented by six boxers, as announced by the Algerian Boxing Federation (FAB) on Wednesday.

The delegation, led by a technical staff that includes coaches Fratsa Mourad, Bourenane Brahim, and Arab Hamza, departed Wednesday morning to compete in this prestigious global event, which will feature over 180 fighters from 30 countries, including Algeria, all affiliated with the newly established global organization, World Boxing.

Youcef Khelifi, the president of the board overseeing the Algerian Boxing Federation, will head the Algerian contingent. He will also be participating in the World Boxing Congress alongside the Director of National Teams (DEN), Saïd Ibagrachène.

“This event in Colorado offers young Algerian boxers a valuable opportunity to gain experience and face elite competitors. Understanding the high caliber of this tournament, which will showcase the best talents in the sport, our representatives are committed to giving their all in the ring,” stated Mourad Meziane, the national technical director (DTN).

He added, “Open to athletes aged 17 and 18, the Colorado event marks the inaugural Junior World Boxing Championship and will include 10 weight categories for both boys and girls.”

The six Algerian boxers competing in the Colorado championships are: Yahiaoui Mohamed (55 kg), Abdou Mustapha (75 kg), Meziane Riadh-Mohamed (50 kg), Laali Ilyas Akram (65 kg), Bengadad Tarek (90 kg), and Islam Dahlal (70 kg).

All national federations affiliated with World Boxing are eligible to participate in the tournament organized in Colorado, following an open bidding process. The proposal submitted by USA Boxing was deemed the most favorable and received unanimous approval from the World Boxing executive board.

Established in April 2023, World Boxing aims to ensure that boxing remains integral to the Olympic movement. On May 7, 2024, it held its inaugural meeting with the IOC, marking the beginning of a formal partnership aimed at securing boxing’s place in the Olympic Games.

Currently, World Boxing comprises 29 national member federations across five continents involved in international boxing.
