Boughali chairs 37th Extraordinary Session of Arab Parliamentary Union in Cairo

The 37th Extraordinary Session of the Executive Committee of the Arab Parliamentary Union began on Sunday in Cairo, chaired by Brahim Boughali, Speaker of the Algerian People’s National Assembly and President of the Arab Parliamentary Union, according to a statement from the Assembly.
In his address, the President of the Union highlighted the significance of this session, praising the Arab Republic of Egypt for hosting the meeting and acknowledging its pivotal role in supporting Arab causes. He also commended the efforts of the General Secretariat of the Arab Parliamentary Union in following up on decisions and strengthening parliamentary cooperation within the Arab world.
In this regard, Boughali pointed out that the meeting is being held at a “critical time” that requires the unification of the Arab ranks and strengthening the role of parliaments as active instruments for supporting collective efforts. He underscored the Union’s responsibility to defend the key issues of the Arab world, particularly the Palestinian cause, which he described as “the heart of the conflict in the region.”
He emphasised that the current situation demands intensified efforts to counter plans aimed at undermining the historic rights of the Palestinian people, such as attempts to revoke the right of return and alter the legal status of Al-Quds.
“We must strengthen our parliamentary initiatives to support the resilience of the Palestinian people, expose the practices of the occupying forces in international forums, and ensure the legal protection of Al-Quds, the capital of the State of Palestine,” he said.
Boughali also called for activating the “Arab Parliamentary Action Document to Support the Resilience of the Palestinian People,” which was adopted at the seventh joint conference between the Arab Parliament and the Arab Parliamentary Union.
Moreover, he urged thorough preparations for the 150th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, scheduled for Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in April 2025. The goal is to pass an emergency item that reflects the unified Arab position on the Palestinian issue and to garner support from African, Asian, and Latin American parliaments.
The statement added that Boughali addressed the situation in Syria, stressing the need to support a comprehensive political solution that preserves Syria’s unity and sovereignty, and guarantees the safe and dignified return of displaced people, free from external interference.
Boughali also reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment, in its capacity as President of the Arab Parliamentary Union, to supporting Arab parliamentary work and strengthening its role in advancing the causes of the Arab world.
